The Dolomites hold a very special place for me. After photographing weddings all over Italy, from cities to the countryside, I really can’t wait to shoot my first wedding here. I spend a large part of my off-season between these mountains, hiking, mainly skiing, and exploring them slowly, away from the crowds. Photographing a wedding in the Dolomites is something I genuinely look forward to. Not because it’s trendy, but because I deeply know and love this environment, its rhythm, and its limits. This intimate hike-adventure with Erica and Reed shows exactly how I work as a Dolomites wedding photographer: with time, respect for the place, and attention to real moments rather than staged ones.

Today I want to take you into the heart of the Dolomites and share a very personal wedding story. Erica and Reed are a couple from the US who chose to celebrate their union in theDOlomites at Cadini di Misurina, near the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Not a classic destination wedding, not a packed timeline, but an intimate wedding adventure built around movement, silence, and presence. No guests, no pressure to perform. Just the two of them, their wedding outfits in their backpacks, and the desire to experience something real. Choosing the Right Place for a Wedding in the Dolomites
Planning a wedding in the Dolomites is not just about choosing a famous spot. It’s about finding a place that fits who you are, how you move, and how you want to feel on your wedding day. Over the years, I’ve explored many locations across the Dolomites, each with a very different atmosphere, which I suggested to Erica and Reed when they asked for some insight:
Cadini di Misurina, rugged and dramatic, with sharp ridgelines and a raw, powerful energy.
Passo Gardena and Passo Sella, wide panoramic views and relatively easy access
Lake Braies, iconic reflections and postcard scenery, but often very crowded
Alpe di Siusi, open alpine meadows, soft light, and a calmer pace
Seceda, visually striking and recognizable, but requires careful timing
Cadini di Misurina felt right to them immediately. Wild, honest, and a little demanding. A place that doesn’t try to impress, but rewards those who approach it with intention. Helping couples choose the right location is a fundamental part of my work as a photographer. Not what looks best online, but what truly fits them.
Fog, Weather, and the Beauty of the Unexpected
The Dolomites are never predictable, and that’s part of their magic. The day before, after reviewing the forecast, I was skeptical we could do it. It seemed that rain and fog would have been the true stars on that day. I shared my concerns about the weather – I didn’t want them to risk their money – but they were uncompromising about their decision. But they were right, and we’ve been lucky! That day, fog and clouds moved constantly through the valleys. Peaks appeared and disappeared. The light shifted from minute to minute, creating a dramatic and intimate atmosphere that couldn’t be planned. Just be brave enough to be there. Because of the conditions, most hikers stayed away. We experienced these iconic mountains almost alone, wrapped in silence. A wedding day doesn’t need perfection. It needs presence. And often, the unexpected moments are the ones you remember most.
A Quiet Way of Experiencing a Wedding Day
This was not about chasing epic shots or ticking locations off a list. We walked, stopped, waited, and moved again. The pace was slow, intentional. The experience came first, the photographs followed naturally. This approach is central to how I photograph weddings in the Dolomites. I don’t force moments. I let them unfold, guiding when needed and stepping back when the connection takes over. The result is not just a record of how the day looked, but how it felt to be there.
Practical Tips for a Wedding Near Tre Cime di Lavaredo
If you’re considering a wedding or an intimate celebration near Cadini di Misurina or Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a few practical details are important to know.
Parking at Rifugio Auronzo is regulated and must be booked in advance online; the road has limited access. The most convenient airports are Venice or Verona, followed by a rental car.
Late spring and autumn offer fewer people and a quieter atmosphere, while peak summer and ski season tend to be crowded.
Good planning doesn’t remove spontaneity. It protects it.
