How to Propose in a Villa in Florence: the story behind a Wedding Proposal plan
Some proposals write themselves. So, if you’re here wondering how to propose in a Villa in Florence, this one had a story behind it that started months before the actual moment that might be a nice inspiration: a man flying in from Canada with a ring, a plan, and absolutely no photography experience, who somehow found exactly the right words when he first reached out to me.
“I’ve seen your website,” Dilshan wrote, “and finally found EXACTLY what I was looking for.”
He was coming to Florence with his girlfriend, Amolak, in late May. He wanted something intimate. Something Tuscan. Something she would never see coming.
We spent months going back and forth on the details. He thought about the open countryside for a while, a picnic somewhere near Certaldo or Siena, just the two of them and the rolling hills. Then he found Villa Le Fontanelle, a historic villa just outside Florence, and everything clicked.
I know Villa Le Fontanelle pretty well. Maybe because it is the venue closest to where I live, and I have photographed weddings there more times than I can count. So I know every corner of that property: the ancient tower, the Italian garden, the terrace with a view over Florence, the little path that runs through a private wooded area where the light in the late afternoon does things I now have figured out how to predict. When Dilshan told me he had booked it, I genuinely smiled. Having the owner’s private number to coordinate with also helped a bit! 🙂
So, we started creating a plan on how to propose in a Villa in Florence, at Villa Le Fontanelle, in this specific circumstance (check Villa Medicea di Lilliano, I worked there, too, and they did amazingly). His cover story was inspired. Amolak knows he loves history, so he told her he had read about this fascinating old villa and really wanted to visit. She had no reason to doubt him. I was already there, walking the grounds, pretending to be the villa photographer.
We had gone back and forth over timing. He originally wanted to do it in the early afternoon, and I had to push back on that, knowing how the light hits the villa’s nestled corners – harsh and flat – not exactly what you want for the most important photo of your life.
The spot we chose in the end was a path next to the tower, through a gate, into a small private wood. Flowers in the background. Soft golden light filtering through the trees. He got down on one knee, and she said yes.
What followed was two hours of pure joy, wandering the property together, laughing, stopping everywhere the light was doing something beautiful. Amolak had one request going in: flowers and greenery in every shot. Villa Le Fontanelle delivered on that in a way that felt a little unfair to every other venue.
This is what proposal photography in Florence looks like when it comes together. Not a posed setup where she already knows. Not a drone shot from a hundred meters away. Just someone who knows the location, knows the light, and stays out of sight until the moment is completely real.
